If you are looking for a trekking package to one of the remote locations in Nepal to experience wilderness to its fullest then Rara Lake Trek is probably the one for you! Rara Lake trek is an incredible and enchanting trek that takes you to the remote area of Karnali. The trek begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj which is followed by a flight from Nepalgunj to Jumla.

This off the beaten track trek is blessed with the unique and secluded beauty of wild nature and breathtaking scenery. It takes you along the mountainous paths through a series of quaint villages to the banks of Rara lake which is surrounded by Rara National Park. The park is ringed by Trans Himalayan valley with high ridges covered with pine, spruce, juniper forest and alpine pastures.

Rara National Park has its own floral and faunal importance and is a home to many rare and endangered species of birds and animals. The Park flora consists of 1074 species, of which 16 are endemic to Nepal; the fauna 51 species of mammals and 214 species of birds. If you are a real wildlife lover then Rara National Park is the best place to catch a glimpse of wildlife like  ghoral, leopards, Himalayan Black Deer, musk deer, and rare red panda. It is a delight for the bird watchers too. Local people of this region are engaged in agriculture for a living. They also rear goats and extract medicinal herbs to sell them.

The region is dominated by people of Thakur community. Thakur Baba’s Temple in the southeast corner of the lake is very popular. It is believed that Local people believed that God Thakur shot an arrow to open the passage of the lake to reduce the damage caused by the flood. Detailed Itinerary

Day 01: Arrive at Kathmandu

As you arrive at the airport in Kathmandu, a representative from Intrepid Treks will welcome you and transfer you to a pre-booked three-star hotel at Kathmandu. A luxurious cab drive will drop you at the hotel. Check-in and rest for a while. If there is enough time, you can roam around the Kathmandu city in the evening. Spend your night at a hotel in Kathmandu! (Breakfast included)

Day 02: Sightseeing in Kathmandu Valley

Today after breakfast we visit to the monkey temple – Swayambhunath. We walk up the stairs to the stupa. From the height, we can get an excellent view of Kathmandu city. Then we head towards the largest stupa in the world – Boudhanath stupa. In the evening, we return back to our hotel for overnight stay. This day is reserved in case you are stuck in airport due to flight delays.(Breakfast included)

Day 03: Fly to Nepalgunj

Today we fly to a place near the Nepal – India border i.e. Nepalgunj. The place is extremely hot and is one of the hottest city in the Terai region of Nepal. Lying close to border, then city is extremely chaotic with people, crowd, vehicle, cart, etc. Upon our arrival, we check in to the hotel and if possible, we visit a popularBageshwori temple here. The temple holds a high value amongst the Himdu people. We stay at a hotel in Nepalgunj for the night. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included)

Day 04: Fly to Jumla and trek to ChalaChaur

Today, we take another flight that takes us to one of the remote places in Nepal i.e. Jumla. Upon arrival, we have our lunch with the trekking crew and fuel up for our trekking journey ahead. We leave Jumla valley and traverse through a small village of Mircha. The village is remote with small walls that forms an enclosure with number of stupas on our way. The stupas are old that holds history of 15th century. As we move forward, the trail takes us through a path spread with rocks to ChalaChaur which is our stopping point for the day. We set up a tented camp here. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included)

Day 05: Cross a Pass

Leaving ChalaChaur we follow our trail that goes through a path paved with steep stones. We cross the forests of pine, birch as we ascend up to grassy pass at an elevation of 3500 metres. At the pass, we can get the glimpse of Mt. Kanjiroba. The twin peaks that towers above in the east is visible clearly from this point. We descend down from the pass through lush forests to meadows where we set up our tent for the night. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included)

Day 06: Trek via Sinja to Botan

We continue our trail along the Jaljala river and pass pine forests and terraced farmland. A temple named Kanak sundari that was built over 300 years ago is the major attraction for our journey today. We pay our visit to the temple. The temple has a great value amongst the Hindu pilgrims. We further follow our trail along the river and cross a bridge over the river before we descend down to reach Sinja village. Sinja village was once a capital of Malla kings. A village that lies upon an alluvial plain on the west bank of SinjaKhola has stones paved on the street that reflects so much about the Malla kings, their history and lifestyle. We walk further until we reach the village of Botan. We set up our tent at Botan. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included)

Day 07: Trek to Rara Lake Border

We follow our path along the Ghattariver enjoying the beauty that lies in pristine and lush nature. As we march forward the scenic route winds up into a beautiful valley where we can see terraced farmlands. No sooner, we will find ourselves amidst the Rara National Park. Though the smallest national park, the richness in natural diversity is found in abundance. We spend rest of our time exploring the park and its ecological richness. We set up our tent at Gorosingha which is our stopping point for the day. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included)

Day 08: Trek to Rara Lake

Leaving Gorosingha, we ascend up towards the Ghurchimara ridge at an elevation of 3710 metres. Though the trail looks quite strenuous, it’s not that demanding. Within one and half hour we will find ourselves on the top of the ridge admiring the panoramic views of mountains to the north and the stunning views of alluring nature all around. We further descend down from the ridge when the sparkling Raralake comes to our sight. We walk through birch and bamboo forest and crosKhatyarriver. We continue walking upstream until we stand right in front of the azure Raralake. We set up our tent in the bank of Raralake. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included)

Day 09 & 10: Rest day at Rara Lake

We have set aside two days to satisfy ourselves with the beauty that lies in the pristine water of Rara. Meanwhile, we can also explore the villages around Rara and get adhered to people, their lifestyle and culture. We also walk to the view tower that offers magnificent views of lake and surrounding hills. If you are interested in swimming, you can also enjoy swimming in the fresh water of the lake. We stay for next two nights in the bank of Rara lake. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included)

Day 11: Trek to Jhyari to River Camp

After acknowledging the beauty of Raralake for two days, it’s time to depart from the lake and continue our trail to river camp. We cross a ridge and walk towards the Jhyari village. We stroll along the Jhyaririver and continue walking along terraced farmlands until we reach a Dhauligarkhola valley. We set our tent near the bank of the river under the backdrop of snow-capped mountain peaks. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included)

Day 12: Cross GhurchiLagna Pass to Chautha

Today we pass various farmlands and enter the village of Pina. Pina is a small village with a police post and few hotels for accommodation. Leaving Pina, we ascend up to the GhurchiLagna Pass. We continue walking and pass various chortens, pastures, walnut groves and a narrow valley to a village to Chautha. We set up our tents for the night at Chautha. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included)

Day 13: Trek to Tharamara

Moving ahead along the Sinjariver, we pass the hotel and a clinic that lies under a hanging massive of rock at Kabra. The place is popular for Silaji which is considered as a medicinal mineral which is believed to be a cure to anything. We follow our trail and pass the villages namely Bumra and Nyawre. We climb up to a pasture at Tharamara where we set up our tent for the night. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included)

Day 14: Trek to Jumla

Our trail slopes gently upward towards Jumla.We pass birch trees on our way to DanpheLekh via Khali Lagna. The ridge offers some stunning views of mountains and Jumla village below. Leaving the top of the ridge, we descend down slowly until we reach Jumla. As we reach Jumla, we explore the village and stay at a tent in the village. Enjoy campfire as you sleep beneath the open sky admiring the beauty of stars in the sky. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included)

Day 15: Fly to Nepalgunj and then to Kathmandu

Today, we take a flight back to Nepalgunj. As soon we arrive in Nepalgunj, we take another flight that takes us to the capital city – Kathmandu. Upon arrival, check in to the hotel and take rest for a while. Stay at the hotel for the night. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included)

Day 16: Leisure day in Kathmandu

Spend this day at your leisure in or around Kathmandu. You can take one of our optional day trips, relax or roam around Kathmandu city. Perhaps go for a massage – you deserve it – or do some last-minute shopping. Take a leisurely lunch in one of the many tea gardens or dine on one of the rooftop terraces. Overnight stay at the hotel (breakfast included).

Day 17: Farewell

After this wonderful adventure, it’s finally time to bid you a farewell. We will pick you up from the hotel and escort you to the airport for your journey home! We hope with all our hearts that we served you well and look forward to seeing you or your friends again someday.
