Trip Overview
The Langtang Valley with Gosaikunda Lake Trek is a challenging but rewarding trekking site in Langtang. It is the best trekking site for adventure enthusiasts who wish to have thrills and adventure with a dash of spirituality as well. The 15-day Langtang Valley with Gosaikunda Lake Trek provides you with a glimpse of the breathtaking beauty of the Langtang Valley, the high-altitude mountain passes, and the holy lake Gosaikunda. The trekking here in this region of the nation is a mixed affair, ranging from forests and terraced fields to brutal high alpine conditions.
You trek inside Langtang National Park, and you are able to see some of the diverse flora and fauna. You are able to see rare plants and also get a glimpse of wild animals and birds. You'll pass through small Tamang and Sherpa villages. Their dressing, culture, occupation, language, and food all largely draw inputs from Tibet. The whole region is famous for its rich history, Buddhist monasteries, and gompas in the lap of the grand Himalayas.
Langtang Valley trekkers have the surrounding landscapes of the colossal Langtang Lirung (7,227 m), the region's highest point above the valley floor. Horizon sunrise and sunset pictures are beautiful with the other Gangchempo giants of Dorje Lakpa, Naya Kangri, and Yala Peak rising above them. As one ascends to Gosaikunda, further distant views open up toward the panoramas of the Ganesh Himal and Manaslu Range regions, and if fortunate, a distant view of Annapurna and the Tibetan Plateau. The viewpoint created above Lauribina La Pass and Gosaikunda brings about a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of snowy mountain tops and deep gorges with shiny lakes below.
An ideal mix of culture, religion, and unspoiled biodiversity to save makes this trek fit into every person's schedule seeking a valuable but moderately paced Himalayan experience without the crowds.
Route Description
The classical 15-day Langtang Valley with Gosaikunda Lake Trek begins when you arrive in Kathmandu. On the following day, you will be visiting some of the Kathmandu UNESCO Heritage Sites and shopping for anything that might be felt missing. The trek then begins officially, which is generally preceded by a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi. The drive passes through tall hills, terraced fields, and the other bank of the Trishuli River. Then, after climbing up to Bedrawoti, one is only climbing up to Syabrubesi.
The trek begins from Syabrubesi for Langtang Valley with Gosaikunda Lake. The Syabrubesi trail follows the gorge of the river Langtang Khola, down which it goes through forest cover and villages to reach Langtang National Park. You trek through beautiful rhododendron and pine forests to the Lama Hotel. The change in the cover of the wet forest and the view of snowy peaks here and there are warranted on climbing, usually after the village of Langtang. Langtang Village is a tough village, which was rebuilt after the 2015 earthquake. The trek further goes on its path to Kyangjin Gompa, which is a beautiful and holy resting place in this trek. Kyangjin Gompa is encircled by snow peaks and consists of an ancient monastery and a yak cheese factory.
An acclimatization trek to Chorkari Ri or Tserko Ri, for that matter, provides a breathtaking panorama of Langtang Lirung and the surrounding Himalayas. After breathing in the high-mountain air, the trek goes downhill in steps to Lama Hotel and then branches off to Thulo Syabru, a scenic Tamang village with a view over the river valley. The trail climbs here through pine and rhododendron forest to Shin Gompa, a serene ridge-top village. Progressing further, the trail takes one to the holy alpine waters of Gosaikunda Lake, a stunning high-altitude shrine place surrounded by such picturesque landscapes.
On the way back from Gosaikunda and the other lakes around, the return trek returns up by the same path to Shin Gompa and back to Dhunche, the Rasuwa district headquarters. One then has a drive back to Kathmandu through scenic views, and the trek is complete. It's a natural landscape, cultural variety, and religious significance, and so one of the best of these moderate treks in Nepal.

Good to Know
Best Season to Trek
Spring (March to May)
The spring trekking season is valued throughout the world. The weather is warm and settled, with rhododendrons combined with wildflowers and orchids blanketing the green treks in lower altitudes such as the Lama Hotel and Thulo Syabru. Visibility is excellent, with excellent views of the snow mountains of Langtang Lirung and Ganesh Himal opening out in front of the eyes. It is also the time to see wildlife such as Himalayan monals and langurs.
Autumn (Mid-September to November)
Autumn is the finest as well as the season for trekking. The air after the rains during the monsoon is still crystal clear, the sky deep blue, and the mountain views are excellent. The weather is pleasant, and all the trails are dry and safe. It is also a holiday season in Nepal with Dashain and Tihar, during which the cultural celebrations can be seen in full swing among the mountain villages.
The monsoon and winter seasons are not recommended for trekking in Nepal's high-altitude region.
In the winter season, it is ice-cold in the Himalayan region. The views are not clear and are covered with fog most of the time.
Monsoon brings very high chances of heavy rain, and thereby the trail will be slippery, and there are very high chances of landslides in hill regions.
Food and Accommodation
Food
You’ll be eating at teahouses run by local people. The menu offers freshly cooked meals; most vegetables are locally grown, and you’ll get a chance to taste authentic Nepali food. For breakfast, you’ll be eating Tibetan bread or chapati, omelets, porridge, pancakes, eggs, and hot tea or coffee; whatever is available at the teahouse, you’ll be served.
For lunch and dinner, you’ll be eating dal bhat (rice, lentil soup, vegetables, and pickle). You’ll have other food options of foods like noodles, fried rice, momo, options of vegetables, soups, and pasta.
Foods are generally healthy and filling. There are non-vegetarian options also available.
Accommodation
During the Langtang Valley with Gosaikunda Lake Trek, you’ll be staying at a teahouse operated by the local community. You’ll get a basic but comfortable bedroom, generally twin-sharing rooms. Simple wooden beds, foam mattresses, pillows, and blankets are available. Generally, bathrooms are shared; usually, squat or Western-style bathrooms are available. The main attractions of these teahouses are their dining halls, which are large and comfortable. In a high-altitude teahouse, don’t expect hot showers and electricity for charging.
Trekking Difficulty
The Langtang Valley with Gosaikunda Lake Trek is a moderate trek. The trek suits those trekkers who have prior knowledge of basic trekking information and have some trekking experience. Technical climbing is not involved in the trek, but the trek involves a mix of steep ascents, high-altitude terrain, and rock walks. The trek is strenuous. The summit of the trek is Chorkari Ri at 5,033 meters, and the grand climb and descent over several days require endurance and steady pacing.
Trekkers must climb for 5 to 7 hours a day. There is rather tough climbing, particularly while climbing up to Gosaikunda or descending towards Dhunche. The trail goes through well-trodden trails to pass through dense forest and river gorges to alpine ridges and glacial ground.
Acclimatization days like the trek to Chorkari Ri are included in the itinerary in order to avoid the risk of altitude sickness. With proper preparation, proper attitude, and proper pace, most healthy individuals can make this trek and enjoy it as being rewarding and achievable.
Permits for Trek
TIMS Card (Trekkers’ Information Management System)
The TIMS card is required for all trekkers in Nepal and helps with safety tracking and trail maintenance. This card can be obtained through a registered trekking agency and costs around NPR 2,000.
Langtang National Park Entry Permit
The Langtang National Park Permit allows access to the protected area and can be obtained in Kathmandu, Dhunche, or Syabrubesi. It costs approximately NPR 3,000 for foreign nationals.
Shivapuri-Nagarjun National Park Permit
If your trek begins via the Sundarijal–Shivapuri route, you’ll also need a Shivapuri–Nagarjun National Park permit, which costs around NPR 1,000.
In recent years, the Nepal Tourism Board has mandated that all trekkers in national parks, including Langtang, must be accompanied by a licensed guide.
What to Expect
Moderate Physical Challenge
This is a moderate hike—no technical ascents involved, but it does require stamina. Expect to hike 5–7 hours per day at altitudes between 1,400 m and more than 5,000 m. Good acclimatization is important, and there are some gentle rises and tough parts. A basic fitness level and some previous trekking or mountain walking experience are best.
Diverse Terrain
The trek passes through high-grass yak plateaus, river gorges, bamboo and rhododendron jungles, and mountain ridges. Some days consist of sharp uphills and long downhill walks, while some have a moderate level of ascent and descent. The terrain also changes from soft woodland paths to tough mountain paths and bald alpine ridges.
Basic but Comfortable Teahouses
Accommodation is in local teahouses with twin-share rooms, shared bathrooms, and intimate dining halls. While facilities are basic, most have hot food, warm blankets, and pleasant surroundings. Hot showers, charging, and Wi-Fi are available at a few (generally for a small fee).
Hearty Local Meals
Food is freshly prepared, and high-calorie—dal bhat, noodles, momos, soups, and Tibetan bread are the basic staples. Vegetarian food is not rare and is safe to consume. You will also have hot drinks like ginger tea and masala chai to get you warm at high altitudes.
Cultural Immersion
You'll be surrounded by Tamang and Tibetan Buddhist heritage—hillslope monasteries and whirling prayer wheels to yak herders, and stone houses. A visit to Kyanjin Gompa, cheese factories, and the holiest-of-holies Gosaikunda Lake, provides you with abundant cultural and spiritual light.

It is a moderate trek. There is no need for technical knowledge, but good physical condition and some amount of walking experience are recommended due to altitude and long walking duration.
I joined Wildman's tour to Nepal for ABC trekking at the end of March, and during the trekking we were taken well care of by Nepal Intrepid Treks and Expedition. The local guides are professional, friendly and always know what we need before we ask for help, and the porters are honest and reliable. I believe that without their hard work, it is impossible for me to complete this amazing journey. A month has passed, the towering mountains, the blooming azaleas and the guides and porters’ dedication to their work are still vivid in my memory and it seems like only yesterday. Highly recommended!
